TOUR DESCRIPTION
Whether you have already ticked off Rome’s iconic attractions or are eager to delve into the city’s hidden treasures, our carefully crafted 2.5-hour slow walking tour promises an enriching experience. Embark on a captivating journey from the serene Tevere riverbank to the historic Aventine hill, one of the seven foundational hills of Rome dating back to the 8th century B.C.
Unveil the mystique of medieval times, as Aventine’s challenging access made it a preferred location for monks and knights to establish their monasteries and sanctuaries. Our panoramic path, offering sweeping views of the Tevere and the City, gently guides you to the summit, where the rich history of this remarkable site awaits.
Begin your exploration at the breathtaking Giardino degli Aranci (Gardens of Oranges), a real haven with a stunning panorama of Rome, featuring the majestic Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica as its centerpiece. Delve into the medieval wonders of the Basilica of Santa Sabina, showcasing high aisles and a splendid apse. Embark on a journey through time at the Basilica of SS. Alessio e Bonifacio, a 4th-century A.D. masterpiece renowned for its magnificent sculptures and mosaics. Wander through the medieval cloister, immersing yourself in the echoes of the past.
Discover the secrets of Malta Knights Square, once the headquarters of the Templar Knights, with its vantage point overlooking the Tevere River. This square hides one of the most worldwide famous secrets of Rome: from the lock of one of its arcades it is possible to see the dome of St. Peter in its magnificence and with the green outline of the tall hedges of the garden, getting a magical frame hard to forget. If there is not too much queue, you will also be able to peek from the lock for this unique visual effect.
We then descend from the Aventine towards Circus Maximus located between the Aventine and Palatine hills: a venue for games since the foundation of the city. Finally, it is time to enjoy with your local guide a nice break with a typical Italian gelato. It is the last chance to have some talk with your friendly guide and say hello till next time!
The tour finishes at the feet of Palatine hill, you can choose to keep walking in the area for a self visit in this outstanding place, or going to visit new places in Rome and enjoy the magnificent eternal City.
